ABOUT US

MISSION

"Together let us seek the heights" -- the Alpha Chi Omega motto -- applies to everything the Delta Pi chapter of Alpha Chi does at the University of Tennessee. We aim for the top, always, individually and as a group.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Alpha Chi Omega is a women’s fraternity founded on Oct. 15, 1885, at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. Today, there are more than 200,000 members in more than 130 collegiate chapters and 200 alumnae chapters nationwide who are served not only by the fraternity’s National Council, but also by the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation and our National Housing Corporation.

Our national philanthropic focus is supporting the victims of domestic violence, and locally Delta Pi raises money for and volunteers at the YWCA and the Family Justice Center. We raise hundreds of dollars annually for those organizations through events we sponsor such as CarniVol and Dodging Domestic Violence Dodgeball Tournament.

Delta Pi encourages its members to excel in academics and leadership, and Alpha Chis are involved all over campus and throughout the community individually. But we also believe in being active as sisters, and we proved our Greek spirit by winning Greek Week 2012!

As one of the first groups to take residence in UT’s Sorority Village, we look forward to a new era in Delta Pi sisterhood. With room for 52 residents and facilities that will accommodate both collegiate and alumnae events, our beautiful house represents our commitment to the past, present and future of Alpha Chi Omega.

DELTA PI HISTORY

Alpha Chi Omega came to Big Orange Country just over 75 years after the fraternity was founded on Oct. 15, 1885, at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. University of Tennessee President Andrew Holt got the ball rolling by inviting Alpha Chi Omega to begin colonizing on campus in January 1961.

Spring pre-rush teas were held in February, with Alpha Chi represented by local alumnae, the Delta Iota chapter from Emory University in Atlanta and Martha Graham, the national collegiate vice president. Three transfer students, all Alpha Chi initiates from other chapters, also served as hostesses.

Forty-five young women pledged on May 13, and in a ceremony performed by the Brenau chapter, 25 were initiated. On Oct. 21, 1961, the 97th chapter of Alpha Chi Omega was formally installed at UT, and 11 more initiates joined the May initiates as charter members of the chapter. And thus, Delta Pi was born!

Alpha Chi Omega originated within a music school, and music and the arts are an important emphasis within the fraternity – as symbolized by our badge, a Grecian lyre. We designate each February as MacDowell Month (named for the MacDowell artist colony in New Hampshire, Alpha Chi’s first philanthropic project) and encourage members to attend, celebrate, patronize and participate in the arts.
